Workshops

I offer photography workshops both in the field and in the studio. Please click on a category below to learn more

What to expect in the field:

All field locations are scouted personally by me ahead of time. Please take a look at my work and style, as these scenes are what I look for. Unless specifically advertised as a wildlife workshop, these are aimed at landscape scenes (although you are welcome to shoot anything you wish!). Expect to meet early in the morning, although I will usually camp or stay close by the night before. We will shoot all morning until the light is not suitable, with a long lunch break. Depending on the distance from the vehicles and/or trailhead, downloading and reviewing images can happen during lunch. We will shoot again in the afternoon until sunset.

All cameras and skill levels are welcome. Groups are limited to 5-6 participants, and individual attention is guaranteed. Please be prepared for all weather conditions and bring appropriate gear. Please bring food for yourself unless other arrangements are made. Workshop participants are required to provide their own transportation, lodging, meals, and photography equipment and supplies. Each workshop will indicate if we are shooting from the vehicles or hiking several miles. Having said that, one person’s idea of strenuous may not be appropriate for another.  Participants should be capable of walking at least a mile with all photo equipment and personal gear.

Just announced: A top panoramic gear manufacturer has agreed to give my participants a discount for purchasing new gear!

Recommended gear:

  • Camera and lenses
  • Sturdy tripod
  • Rain gear
  • Sunscreen & Bug Repellent
  • Snacks and water
  • Extra clothes
  • Sturdy walking shoes
  • Head lamp or flash light
  • Notebook
  • Laptop computer for digital darkroom and critique opportunities
  • Backpack for personal gear

What to expect in the studio:

Studio workshops are generally 8 hours in my studio in Portland, OR unless other arrangements are made. We generally start at 8AM and end at 5PM, and lunch will be provided. The topics are listed on each individual workshop, please let me know what else you would like to cover. All supplies are included in the printing workshop, but if you have a specific paper bring it or make arrangements for me to get some ahead of time. I will show you digital editing and printing techniques which work for me, and may not necessarily be what you have learned or read about before. There are many ways to accomplish editing, I'll show you some best practices. I generally use Lightroom and Photoshop, along with some specialty programs for panoramas and some plug-ins. If you have specific needs, please let me know. Bring a thumb drive, and your laptop if you want to work on your own machine.
